We’re happy to announce that author Gary Gand will be signing copies of his book Julius Shulman: Chicago Midcentury Modernism as part of this year’s show. Gand will be signing books Sunday, October 24 from 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
The book features both vintage and new photographs of Chicago’s residential modernist landmarks commissioned by Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond.
From their website:
A visionary artist who has achieved worldwide fame, Julius Shulman transformed architectural photography. From his earliest photographs to those featued in JULIUS SHULMAN: CHICAGO MID-CENTURY MODERNISM, his work demonstrates a profound sensitivity to and appreciation for the spaces in which people live. These spaces, as seen through his lens, are at once luminous and profoundly shadowed, becoming spaces of intrigue and extraordinary beauty into which the observer longs to enter. It is fitting that the only modernist survey of Chicago’s residential architecture was recorded by the master himself. He wouldn’t have had it any other way.
Shulman, who died in 2009, “was more than just the famed architectural photographer whose iconic work fills books and museums.”
As a founder and Vice President of Bauhaus and Beyond, Gand works to protect and preserve the architectural and artistic history of the Chicago region.
